The Two Thumbs Up Rule by Justin S. Solotoff MSPT Fairfield Physical Therapy Center

When performing shoulder exercises overhead during boot camp you must remember to keep your thumbs pointed up.  Biomechanically, pointing the thumbs up rotates the shoulder externally, preventing the underlying rotator cuff tendons from pinching within the joint.  Repetitive pinching (impingement) of the rotator cuff tendons could lead to inflammation (tendinitis) and/or a tear.

The two thumbs up rule should be applied to the following common shoulder exercises: front raises, side raises, butterflies, scaptions, lat pull downs, military presses, wall climbs, upright rows and overhead pulleys. Contributor, Justin S. Solotoff, MSPT
