Be careful with Heat Exhaustion
Since we workout in the early morning or late evening hours we have the biggest advantage of experiencing comfortable weather.
As the hours pass and the temperature rises we need to be careful with our workouts. One of the major concerns we hear about in the news is people suffering from heat exhaustion.
According to the Mayo clinic heat exhaustion is a condition where symptoms may include heavy sweating and rapid pulse, as a result of the body overheating.
It is typically caused by exposure to high temperatures, particularly combined with humidity and strenuous physical activity. If untreated the results can be dangerous progressing to what is called a heat stroke, a life threatening condition. This means the body is less able to cool itself efficiently.
Symptoms are, heavy sweating, faintness, weak or rapid pulse, low blood pressure, nausea, low-grade fever or dark urine.
It is treatable? Yes.
How to keep cool, stay safe by drinking enough fluids, wearing the proper clothes and working out in the morning or evening hours.
Drinks can replace, sodium, potassium and chloride you lose while sweating. Avoid drinks that contain, caffeine or Alcohol that causes the body to lose fluid.
Wearing loose fitting clothing, (breathable wear) light colors (limits exposure to the sun) can promote sweat evaporation and cooling by letting more air pass over your body.
Avoiding midday sun this usually when the heat index is at it’s highest. Choose a shady spot or workout in a pool.
Wear sunscreen- sunburn usually limits the bodies’ ability to cool itself.
Try other options like working out indoors, walking around the mall or climbing the stairs in your house.
During our workouts make sure to drink your water and continue to do this throughout the day. If you miss a morning workout try to avoid working out between 1-5pm, or try a night class.
There are nutrient packed low caloric waters that can replace the body with essential vitamins and minerals lost during a workout. Carry one with you throughout the day (try to find ones which are low in sodium and sugar). Always remember to hydrate and try to find ways to keep cool.
