Simple Ways to Boost your Metabolism, Part 1

images1Do you have friends who can eat whatever they want and don’t gain any weight? I do. These friends were lucky enough to inherit a speedy metabolism. While genetics plays a big part in our metabolism, research has identified simple ways to give it a boost.
The first idea is to build muscle. At metabolic rest most people tend to burn calories. People with more muscles tend to burn more. For every pound of muscle the body uses about six calories a day to sustain it. While each pound of fat burns only two calories a day.
Aerobic exercise and drinking water can also crank your metabolism. Exercise may not always build big muscle but it can speed up your metabolism even in the hours after your workout. The key is to push yourself with your workouts. A high intensity workout like bootcamp delivers a longer increase in resting metabolic heart rate. Of course if you’ve taken one of our many classes you will burn up to 600 calories during the hour. You’re body will want to replenish these calories during the day somehow. We recommend drinking plenty of water. The body needs water to process calories. If you’re even mildly dehydrated your metabolism will slow down. In a study where adults drank eight glasses of water per day they burned more than those who drank four. Further, Ice-cold beverages prompt the body to burn more during digestion. Research suggests drinking five or six glasses of water on the rocks can burn up to ten calories a day.
Studies indicate when you eat large meals with many hours in between you can really slow down your metabolism. We recommended eating smaller but more frequent meals throughout the day. Eating every 3-4 hours can really boost your metabolism and you tend to eat less at mealtime. Furthermore, add some spice to your meals. Research suggests eating spicy foods speeds digestion, which in turn gives your metabolism a jolt.
It’s common sense for most of us but we need to stick to it. I hear clients mention they missed breakfast or lunch. I can’t stress how important food is to our system especially when we workout. It’s feeds you energy and it nourishes our bones and body.
Find a way to incorporate these ideas into your plan and you will begin to feel results.

Stay tuned for more next month.
