Holiday Food Fears
Halloween is over and November begins the holiday season! Getting into the spirit means a lot of different things to different people but for many it means OVEREATING! There are several things you can do to avoid this:
1. Establish an action plan: Tell yourself, I will make sure to workout at least three times a week (hello bootcamp!). Remind yourself that the extra serving of pumpkin pie with whip cream WILL pack on the pounds. Say “NO” to seconds! Think about the snack you really want to indulge in for the day and just have that whether it’s the 200 calorie latte at Starbucks or the brownie from your kids’ bake sale at school. It’s okay to have one treat a day but don’t multiply it!
2. Use reminders: If you are going to a party and you really don’t want to overeat, wear a certain bracelet or watch that you deem the ‘diet reminder’ item. Wear it knowing it will help you say no to the calorie-rich spreads you encounter at parties.
3. Permission for favorites: Tell yourself you will have Aunt Barbara’s pecan pie but you won’t have the mashed potatoes. Substitute. If you know you must have that pumpkin spice latte every day during the holiday season, then don’t have ice cream for dessert after dinner. Have a piece of fruit instead. Enjoy your holiday favorites but take out usual suspects that are full of calories.
4. Don’t give in to ‘food pushers’: There’s always someone at a party or holiday meal that will want to make sure they’ve asked you repeatedly to try something or they will even go so far as to make sure they have put it on your plate even if you’ve said “No.” Stick to your guns! Don’t eat it! If you have said ‘No’, then that is it. You don’t need to over-explain why you don’t want that big pile of sweet potatoes and marshmallow casserole, just say ‘No thank you.’ They will get the hint eventually and leave you alone. And your belly and thighs will thank you!
5. Leftovers: Don’t keep too many in the fridge. You will feel that you need to eat all of it before it spoils. If you are at a dinner party, don’t take anything home with you even if the host insists. You don’t need those extra calories in the fridge staring at you! If you are the host of the party, make sure to give doggie bags to your guests.
Enjoy the holiday season but try to maintain your weight at the very least. And if you must indulge here and there because it’s so irresistible, it’s okay, but make it up with calorie-burning exercise. Come to bootcamp! And take walks and stretch in between.
