Embrace Change!
If you’re one of the many who have a difficult time with change because of how it affects your life, you’re not alone.
For years scientist have been studying the effects of change and human behavior. Findings discovered brain chemistry changes when sudden unexpected occurrences happen. Some feelings that may occur are, anxiety, stress or depression.
People who exercise may want to change something in a physical sense. The hope is that the exercise will make positive changes to their bodies. As their body changes so can their mood. From frustration and sadness to empowerment and happiness.
We live in a society where change is constant. Styles change every season and some of us find ourselves adding new items to our wardrobe. Others may decide to act against this change and develop their own sense of style. Whatever your preference there are ways to deal with change effectively so that it does not become overwhelming. Here are some strategies which I find to be helpful in dealing with change.
Strategies
1- Choose something you want to change, i.e. run a 10k
2- Break it down, i.e. this week I will run 2 miles.
2- Pay attention to your thoughts and feelings, are you anxious or happy?
(It’s important to acknowledge these feelings because you can learn from them)
3- Set a start date, i.e. I will begin 11/20/09.
4- Share your goals with your family or friends. They can be supportive coaches who can cheer you on.
5- Adapt a flexible attitude- i.e. when you don’t run on the day you posted, start again the next day but make sure not to do this constantly or you will not meet goal.
5- Turn your negative thoughts into positive one, i.e. I can’t run today, it’s too cold into, I will layer up and go for a run. It will make me feel good.
When you change your thoughts you will begin to develop the confidence in yourself to survive whatever comes your way.
5- You ran a 10k! Applaud yourself for a job well done. Acknowledge the effort involved and accept your victory. Some of us may minimize even the smallest of gains, which is a self-defeating. Acknowledge and praise yourself. You deserve it!
6- Stop being content with what is/was and accept that change is good, i.e. you stop at a 5k because you notice that you’re jeans are tight. Well this will not last long. Accept that your body is changing and developing muscles. These muscles need to be stretched and elongated. Try yoga in between runs and you’ll notice your jeans will fit nicely.
Learn to embrace change and build a happier you!
