THINK LIKE AN OLYMPIAN…FASTER, HIGHER, STRONGER!
Once again the Winter Olympics are upon us. Another four years have passed and another group of the world’s fastest and strongest athletes will dazzle us as they perform at their highest level. Besides enjoying the spectacle surrounding the Olympics those that watch are often inspired to begin training themselves. Most of us will never reach the heights and goals of the world’s Olympic athletes but we can reach our personal goals and reach higher to create even more difficult goals for ourselves.
For me, watching the downhill skiers and the figure skaters usually gets me motivated to workout. Even my five-year-old daughter was getting in on the inspiration when we watched figure skating the other day. She was sliding around the room in socks performing her version of a triple Lutz. I had to stop her at a certain point for a reality check so that we didn’t hurt our selves or the furniture. But we were both swept away in the moment for awhile feeling as though we, too, could be the athletes on the ice gracefully spinning and twirling for thousands of eyes to witness. Moments like those give me a burst of energy and I try to carry that with me to my next workout. Just feeling as though I can go that extra mile on the treadmill or the extra minute of jumping jacks at bootcamp because those Olympic athletes can do it, gets me through it. I think of their rigorous training and the exercises they must perform to break through to the next level. We, too, have levels that need breaking through. With some perseverance and mind over matter, we can get through that extra push-up and that extra set of burpees or star jumps.
Faster. Higher. Stronger. Don’t be afraid to use this Olympic motto next time you are working out. Let’s get to your fastest speed. Let’s get you jumping higher. And let’s get you stronger. Your body will thank you for it. And these workouts can help you in any sport or activity you may participate in. If you are a skier, it’s important to strengthen your thighs to get down the slopes well. If you are a skater, it’s important to strengthen your core to keep you upright and skating well and gracefully. There is an Olympic athlete in all of us and although we may not be competing in The Games, keeping that motto alive within in us can get us to our personal best! Faster! Higher! Stronger! Keep it in mind and it will keep you going through workouts, through activities…through life. And watch the Olympics next week when it begins. You may be surprised how inspired you can be.
